What to expect at LACMA

LACMA is a large museum campus on Wilshire Boulevard, with a permanent collection and exhibitions presented in its galleries. The David Geffen Galleries display works from across the museum’s global collection on one level, using rotating exhibitions rather than a fixed presentation.

The museum traces its roots to the Los Angeles County Museum of History, Science, and Art, established in Exposition Park in 1910. It became a separate, art-focused institution in 1961 and opened at its Wilshire Boulevard location in 1965.

Several cultural attractions sit on or near the campus. The La Brea Tar Pits and Museum, Petersen Automotive Museum, and Academy Museum of Motion Pictures are all nearby. You can make LACMA part of a museum-focused day by pairing it with the La Brea Tar Pits and Museum or the Petersen Automotive Museum.

You can get tickets online or at the Ticket Office during regular museum hours; members can obtain tickets there without a timed-entry reservation.

Hours, ticket rules and exhibitions can change, so check the official site before you go.

Opening hours

  • Monday, Tuesday and Thursday: 11 AM–6 PM
  • Friday: 11 AM–8 PM
  • Saturday and Sunday: 10 AM–7 PM
  • Wednesday: closed

Last checked November 2026. Hours can change on holidays and for special events.

Because the David Geffen Galleries use rotating exhibitions, the art on view changes rather than following one fixed presentation. Check the current exhibition details when arranging your visit, particularly if you have a specific show in mind.
